Introduction
What Is Sozo?
Biblical foundation and etiquette
Sozo is simple. All we need is given to us in the Lord's Prayer: Forgive and repent. The Greek word Sozo (Strong's G4982) means to save, to make whole, to heal, to restore to health. It is the same word used throughout the New Testament for salvation, healing and deliverance — because in God's design, they are one and the same act.
The KJV translates Sozo as: save (93x), make whole (9x), heal (3x), be whole (2x). This is not merely emotional support. This is the full power of God's salvation applied to the inner life.
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (sozo)." Romans 10:9 (NIV)
"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save (sozo) the lost." Luke 19:10 (NIV)

Sozo Etiquette

1
Teams of 2 or 3, with one lead. The other member(s) silently intercede and listen for further instruction from the Holy Spirit.
2
Team members prepare for a Sozo session through prayer before it begins.
3
Always start each session with a prayer.
4
Always rely on the Holy Spirit's leading and guidance throughout.
5
Do not counsel. Only see, do, hear and feel what God is doing.
6
Close with a prayer and give God the glory.
7
After the session, team members pray for each other to prevent retaliation.
Foundation
The 4 Levels of Demonic Attack
Understanding open doors and how to close them
Sozo deals specifically with Levels 2 to 4 of spiritual warfare: open doors that we opened ourselves through sin, through not forgiving those who trespassed against us, or through generational curses passed down through the bloodline. Understanding which level is operating is the first step to closing the door permanently.
Critical: In order for deliverance to be successful there can be NO unforgiveness in your life. Unforgiveness is legal permission for demons to torment believers.
Level Open Door Tool Action Required
Level 1

Demons attacking with no legal right
No open door. Outside attack only. Armour of God Command them to leave.
Level 2

Demons attacking due to your own sin
Open door through personal sin and transgression against God Repent and Renounce Prayer to break legal rights of demons.
Level 3

Demons attacking due to what others did to you
Open door through unforgiveness Forgive Commit to fully forgive all trespassers. Cast out the demons for good.
Level 4

Demons attacking through generational curse
Open door through the bloodline Renounce and pray for blessing Renounce sins of ancestors. Prayer to break the generational curse.
"However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you." Deuteronomy 23:5 (NIV)
Process
The 6 Steps to Freedom
Freedom through inner healing
  • 1
Prayer before Deliverance Begin by clearing any unforgiveness in your life. Name the people who hurt you and choose to forgive each one. Confess unforgiveness as sin. If there was any involvement in Satanic activities, witchcraft, cults or occult practices, renounce them by name. Address any sexual immorality and break soul ties.

"Father, because You have forgiven me I choose to forgive others, everyone who has hurt me, lied to me or disappointed me. I forgive [name them]. I confess unforgiveness as sin and repent of it. I receive Your forgiveness and apply it to my life by forgiving myself. Thank You for Your grace and mercy in Jesus Name. Amen."

  • 2
Discover the Hurt in the Physical A brief discussion to identify possible sources of hurt and unforgiveness. Explore relationship with father, mother and siblings. Ask whether they or a family member engaged in witchcraft, occultism or traditional healing. Identify any specific issues they wish to address in this Sozo.
Potential sources of hurt to explore: Father, Mother, Siblings, Friend or Colleague, Spouse or Partner, Church, Events or Trauma.
  • 3
Prayer to Hear from God Ask each person of the Godhead individually. People may relate to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit differently. Asking each individually also increases the active listening time. Questions to bring before God:
    • How do you see me? Who do you say I am?
    • Show me if there is unforgiveness in my heart.
    • Show me if there is fear in my heart.
    • Show me if there is hatred in my heart.
    • Show me any unrepented sin.
    • Bring to light what is hidden in darkness of the soul.
    • Is there any lie I am believing?
  • 4
Closing Open Doors: Forgive, Repent and Renounce Forgiveness and renouncing sin are the keys to closing open doors. For each open door identified, ask: Is the door open? When was it first opened? What is the lie being believed that keeps it open? Ask Jesus to help close the door. Once closed, ask Jesus to seal the door with His blood.
  • 5
Declare Truth: Freedom in Christ Once open doors are closed, declare the truth of what Scripture says about freedom in Christ.
"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36 (NIV)
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Maintaining Your Deliverance Deliverance is only as good as your obedience. Freedom must be maintained through daily choices, Scripture, and walking in the Spirit. See the full maintenance guide in the next section.

5 steps to break legal rights of demons

Command Against Demonic Spirits

"If there are any demons who are attempting to attack, harass, or torment me — I am now coming against each and every one of you in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, operating under the full power, anointing, and authority of God the Father and Jesus Christ. Demons, in the name of Jesus, I now plead the Blood of Jesus Christ against each and every one of you. I command you to leave me right now and never, ever come back on me again. GO NOW in the name of Jesus Christ!"

  • 1
Confess Sin Formally confess before God all known sins committed against Him. Be specific. Name them. Ask for forgiveness under the blood of Jesus Christ. Believe that all sin has been completely washed away.
  • 2
Renounce Sin Agree to renounce every single sin confessed. Give God your word that you will never attempt to return to any area of the occult, sexual immorality, or substance use. Officially renounce each transgression by name.
  • 3
Forgive Name each person who caused hurt and declare forgiveness over them with your own free will. Release judgment into God's hands. Hold no hate or animosity. Declare full forgiveness over each person by name.
  • 4
Break the Legal Rights With sins confessed and forgiveness declared, come against every legal right the enemy has held. In the name of Jesus Christ, break, sever and demolish every legal right. Plead the blood of Jesus against every part of that legal right line.
  • 5
Commitment Reaffirm full surrender of body, soul, spirit and entire life into God's hands. Ask Him to place you into His perfect will. Commit to following the Holy Spirit from this moment forward and never returning to the sin-filled life.

"Father, I now belong to You, and You alone. You, and You alone, are my Rock and my Salvation. My life is now totally in Your hands. I will fully follow You and fully serve You for the rest of my eternal life. Thank You Father. Thank You Jesus. In Your powerful name I pray, AMEN."

Step 6
Maintaining Your Deliverance
16 keys to walking in lasting freedom
Remember: Deliverance is only as good as your obedience. Freedom is not a destination you arrive at once. It is a lifestyle you choose daily.
Action How to Walk It Out
1. Confess sin immediatelyDo not allow sin to linger. Confess, receive cleansing and move forward. Deliverance is only as good as your obedience. (1 John 1:9)
2. Rebuke negative thoughtsRebuke sinful thoughts and replace them with positive, Spirit-led ones. Speak Galatians 5:22-23 out loud. Take every thought captive to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
3. Avoid premeditated sinKeep your plans holy and pleasing to God. Planned sin invites demons directly back in. Focus on pleasing Him. (1 John 3:22)
4. Anticipate increased freedomLearn to dismiss painful memories of the past and live in anticipation of life without bondage. Press toward the goal. (Philippians 3:13-14)
5. Recognise the lieSatan and all his demons are liars. One favourite ploy is convincing you the deliverance was only emotional and that you are still bound. Reject that lie. (John 8:44)
6. Trust God dailyTrust God daily to help you make correct choices. Trying to finish by the flesh what was started in the Spirit is foolishness. (Galatians 3:3)
7. Use the name of JesusUse the name of Jesus, the blood of the Lamb, and your confession of faith against all temptation and condemnation. All condemnation comes from Satan. (Romans 8:1)
8. Let the Holy Spirit control your lifeMake a conscious choice to make Jesus Lord of every day and every situation. Be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)
9. Keep God's Word centralRead, learn and meditate on God's Word every single day. Let it dwell richly in you. (Joshua 1:8)
10. Know your battle gearKeep the full armour of God tight. Truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer. Make this a lifestyle. (Ephesians 6:10-18)
11. Break old unhealthy friendshipsThe enemy will use whatever worked before to regain access. Avoid old patterns and break former habits that led to sin. (James 4:4)
12. This battle is one of dependencyAdmitting you cannot do it alone is not weakness. It is strength. The lie of Satan is that you can do it without God. (John 15:5)
13. Act in God-given authorityRemember the wiles and sneaky traps of the devil. Act in your God-given authority. It will always be honoured by the Father. (James 4:7-8)
14. Praise invites God's presencePraise Him because He deserves it. Praise causes the enemy to flee. Give thanks for His continuous goodness. (Psalm 103:6)
15. Walk in authorityRemind the enemy that you are an heir of God and a joint-heir with Jesus Christ. You have been sent. (Romans 8:17)
16. Diligent warfareWatch for: criticism, negativity, doubt, selfishness, oversensitivity, self-pity, and putting feelings before faith. Help others. Helping others brings blessing. (Galatians 5:19-26)
